Member of Canada's House of Commons urges to commemorate Khojaly tragedy
Canadian MP Hedy Fry made a statement on the Khojaly tragedy at hearings held on the 3rd session of the House of Commons of the Canadian Parliament.
"Today I want to call you to join me and the Azerbaijani community in Canada to commemorate the Khojaly tragedy that happened 18 years ago on the night of 25 to 26 February. I know this date has already passed. Nevertheless, I think that Canada, as a global power, must recognize tragedies of nations whose representatives have come here to start a new life. We should join them in mourning for the victims of these tragedies,” Hedy Fry, who represents the District of Vancouver, said addressing the Speaker of the House.
“Tragedy of lost human life still remains too common thing that happens as a result of human hostility in the world. Canada, through democracy and law, has found a peaceful solution to emerging civil disputes. Remembering such tragedies as Khojaly, we hope to help our new citizens in adapting to the values of peaceful coexistence in Canada, mindful of their past.”
The Parliament of Canada has a complex practice of limiting personal statements of parliamentarians. Statements on political topics are usually coordinated with leaders of the parliamentary-party groups, the OIC Youth Forum said.
Coordinator of the Justice for Khojaly campaign (www.justiceforkhojaly.org) Elvin Mammadov said the campaign has launched an international campaign by sending e-mails of thanks and support for the courageous step by Mrs. Fry to achieve justice for Khojaly.
