VICTOR YUSHCHENKO: “GUAM HAS TO PUT FORWARD NEW PROPOSALS IN THE NEGOTIATION PROCESS OVER THE SETTLEMENT OF THE CONFLICTS”

“GUAM union has a new political essence in regard to the regional cooperation”, was said at the briefing of the presidents of Azerbaijan, Ukraine, Georgia, Poland and Lithuania after the Batumi Summit, APA reports.

President of Ukraine Victor Yushchenko called GUAM as a very successful project. “We discussed at the summit the projects important not only for the region, but whole Europe. Not only the past, but also future unites us. I hope we will reach our goals”. Victor Yushchenko said GUAM had to put forward new proposals in the negotiation process over the settlement of the conflicts. “Unsolved conflicts in Georgia, Azerbaijan and Moldova create a safety concern and instability. Some conflicts haven’t not only the settlement plan, but also the negotiation process. GUAM needs to strengthen its efforts to organize the dialogue”. President of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev gave special priority to the regional security issues. “The regional security issues should not to be put aside, because our development depends on the security in the region. Hundred thousands of people in our country suffer from the separatist aggressive policy. These problems should find their solutions”. President of Georgia Mikhail Saakashvili said his country was in deadlock. “I hope that we will not face with the Europe’s division and threat of border delimitation again”. Polish President Lech Kaczynski said he supported the territorial integrity of Azerbaijan and Georgia. “No country can demonstrate tolerance to the presence of troops of other countries in its territory. Abkhazia is a part of Georgia. We hope that the situation over this conflict region will be changed soon”. Lech Kaczynski said he would support the Georgia’s NATO membership action plan in the meeting of NATO Council of Foreign Ministers in December. Lithuanian President Valdas Adamkus said immediate solutions to the frozen conflicts in GUAM territory were very important. “Invasion of one country into the territory of other one and unsolved conflicts cannot be acceptable”.
