KOÏCHIRO MATSUURA: “UNESCO CANNOT TAKE MEASURES FOR PROTECTION OF HISTORICAL MONUMENTS IN NAGORNO KARABAKH, BECAUSE NO RESULTS HAVE BEEN ACHIEVED IN CONFLICT SOLUTION”

“The protection of cultural monuments in Nagorno Karabakh is important issue”, said Koïchiro Matsuura, UNESCO Director General, APA reports.
The Director General called Nagorno Karabakh conflict as a political issue and said UNESCO could not take measures for the protection of historical monuments in Nagorno Karabakh, because no results had been achieved in the solution of the conflict. “UNESCO is not a political organization and we cannot interfere in these issues in the present stage, but UNESCO is closely watching the process as the international organization”. Koïchiro Matsuura said he was planning to send fact-finding mission to the region, but the date of the visit had not been specified yet. “This mission will not be easy”.
