AZERBAIJAN, TURKEY, GREECE AND ITALY TO SIGN GAS AGREEMENT

Natig Aliyev, Minister of Industry and Energy of Azerbaijan, stated during the meeting with Robert Lombardi, Head of the company EGL-AXPO, in Baku that the Azerbaijani Energy Ministry, Turkey, Greece and Italy would sign a gas agreement in the end of May. Under the agreement, the Azerbaijani gas will be transported to Europe via the territory of Turkey.
The European Union is planning to form inter governmental coordination Council on the gas pipeline issues to step up the efficiency of cooperation amongst the project member-countries. Aliyev stated that representative in the Council would have significant meaning to secure its own interests. EGL-AXPO is one of the well-known companies in Switzerland which cooperates with the largest companies from Italy, Greece and France. This company also cooperates with the StatoilHydro company and is working over the project of Trans Adriatic pipeline as well. Trans Adriatic Pipeline (TAP) is a proposed natural gas pipeline project to transport natural gas from Greece via Albania to Italy. Trans Adriatic Pipeline project was announced in 2003 by Swiss energy company EGL Group. The feasibility study was concluded in March 2006. Two options were investigated: a northern route through Bulgaria, Republic of Macedonia and Albania, and a southern route through Greece and Albania, which was considered to be more feasible. In March 2007, the extended basic engineering was completed.
