TURKMENISTAN

The Republic of Turkmenistan is situated in south-western part of Central Asia. It borders on Republic of Kazakhstan in the north, in the north-east with Uzbekistan, and on Afghanistan in south-east, also with Caspian Sea to the west. Its area occupies 488, 1 km². The population is 4366,383 thousand people.

Turkmenistan consists of administrative – territorial structures: vilayets, etraps, shaxters.

The capital of Turkmenistan is Ashgabat city.

Official State language of Turkmenistan is the Turkmen language. All citizens are granted the right to use their native language. The religion is Islam and Orthodox.

National currency is manat.

TURKMENISTAN –JULY 2008


President of Russia Dmitry Medvedev visited Turkmenistan with the invitation of counterpart Gurbangulu Berdimuhammedov on 4-5th of July (Ria Novosti).Mr Medvedev came to ashgabad after meeting the president of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev in Baku,on 5th of July went to Kazakhistan and then to Japan to take part in the Group of Eight summit.The members of delegation accompanying him were: head of the government Sergey Prixodko,Minister of Culture Alexander Avdeev,Minister of Power Engineering Sergey Shmatko and also leaders Russian oblasts,president of “Lukoil” Vahid Alekberov,representative of “Gasprom” Aleksey Miller,codirector of “Taftneft” Shafagat Takhaudinov.Wthin the visit parties discussed saving peace and security,struggle against terrorism and drugs and emphasized the importance of giving special attention to keeping coorperation on these issues in the future.They talked on the Declaration of Second Caspian Summit.It must be accented that Second Caspian Summit Declaration was adopted in the October of previous year in Tehran.State leaders decided to show determination in realizing of decisions and creating initial terms for calling Third Summit of Leaders of Caspian shore states.The practical result of mutual agreement on actual themes of international life was the opening of regional centre for preventive diplomacy on Central Asia countries in Ashgabad.During the visit president of RF Dmitry Medvedev”s vist to Ashgabad 4 documents were signed between Russia and Turkmenistan .After negotiations Russian leader signed an agreement with Turkman president on coorperation between 2 states on keeping secret information.Several bilateral documents and official agreements,Russian-turkmen joint declaration as well,agreement on education sphere,coorperation program between MFAs,Coorperation Memorandum between Ministry of Culture for 2008-2010 years were signed.Ria Novosti informs that Russian president Dmitriy Medvedev invited his turkman counterpart Gurbangulu Berdimuhammedov to Russia with an official visit.The invitation was accepted with pleasure.The duration and format of visit will be defined through diplomatic negotiations (Ria Novosti).The press service of Turkmenistan President says that Turkmenistna President Gurbangulu Berdimuhammedov appreciates Russian-turkmen negotiations highly.Opening the government meeting Gurbangulu Berdimuhammedov specially emphasized the results of Russian President Dmitriy Medvedev’s visit to Ashgabad.
