Iran built its mutual relations with former Soviet Republics after they received independence on the base of Caspian Sea legal status that was determined since Soviet Union times. Iran insisted on the joint use of Caspian resources. Iran didn't manage to use its unique geographic location and provide its interests in new conditions. At the same time confrontation between Iran and America continued. As a result Islamic Republic built its relations with Russian Federation. When Russia’s position on determination of legal status of Caspian Sea changed and the new issue – division of resource under the depth was on agenda, Iran proposed it’s own version of Caspian legal status. Unlike other Caspian littoral states Iran didn’t manage to take into consideration the real situation in the region and determine the role and opportunities of every regional and international participant of the events. However its territory remained more economically advantageous, more secure and logically right route of energy supply transportation from Caspian region. Through the last decade Iran was not seriously interested in the expansion of constructive cooperation in socio-economic sphere with former Soviet republics. And there weren’t established strong relations with those countries.
