WORLD FINANCIAL MARKET’S STATE FAR FROM NORMAL – US FEDERAL RESERVE SYSTEM The present state of the world’s financial markets is far from normal, Ben Bernanke, head of the US Federal Reserve System, stated on the Bloomberg TV on 13 May. According to Bernanke, companies require time to solve the fiscal crises. In order to overpass the crisis’s impact on the mortgage crediting market, since mid September Federal Reserve System has reduced the rate seven times by 3.25 percentage points to 2%, while the administration of the European Central Bank stated that it is not going to change the key percentage rate which is 4%.

FOOD PRICES INCREASE WILL LEAD TO POVERTY – WFP HEAD The increase of food prices will undoubdatly lead to increase of poverty number in most of the countries including Azerbaijan, Linn Miller, the representtaive of the UN World Food Program (WFP) on Azerbaijan. “At present, about 100mln people are below the poverty line because of the increase in food prices- as per the World Bank. No country can avoid increase in prices,” Miller stated.

AZERBAIJAN, TURKEY, GREECE AND ITALY TO SIGN GAS AGREEMENT Natig Aliyev, Minister of Industry and Energy of Azerbaijan, stated during the meeting with Robert Lombardi, Head of the company EGL-AXPO, in Baku that the Azerbaijani Energy Ministry, Turkey, Greece and Italy would sign a gas agreement in the end of May. Under the agreement, the Azerbaijani gas will be transported to Europe via the territory of Turkey. The European Union is planning to form inter governmental coordination Council on the gas pipeline issues to step up the efficiency of cooperation amongst the project member-countries.
