INVESTIGATION GROUP TO BE ESTABLISHED IN AZERBAIJAN DUE TO PRESIDENTIAL ELECTIONS A group of investigative experts will be established to eliminate the problems which may take place during the Presidential elections in Azerbaijan, the Head of Administration of Azerbaijan Parliament, Safa Mirzayev, reported to TrendNews. This issue will be presented for discussion in Parliament in the near future. According to Mirzayev, the investigative experts will consider the complaints received before and after the elections. The Presidential elections in Azerbaijan will take place on 15 October. Changes and annexes were made to the Electoral Code as a result of discussions between the Government of Azerbaijan and Venice Commission. According to Mirzayev, in addition, it needs to seriously study the issue to reduce the electoral campaign in Azerbaijan.

UN SECRETARY GENERAL’S HOPES FOR CREATION OF PALESTINIAN STATE IN 2008 UNREAL – CONFLICTING SIDES Palestine’s governing FATAH party believes the Palestinian State will be created by the end of 2008. However, there are many doubts about the issue. UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon said at the conference on Middle East in London on 2 May said that, as a result of intensive negotiations, independent Palestinian State may be established on the western bank of the Jordan River by the end of 2008. “Ban Ki-moon is deceiving the international community,” HAMAS Spokesperson Sami Abu Zuhri said to Trend News. “We do want to create an independent Palestinian State, but now it is impossible,” Abu Zuhri said from Gaza in a telephone conversation on 2 May. He believes that international organizations are not interested in creation of the Palestinian State.

USA, AZERBAIJAN TO DISCUSS GLOBAL PROBLEMS The United States and Azerbaijan plan to hold a meeting this summer to discuss the regional security, US Ambassador Anne Derse said to journalists on 5 May. “The bilateral meeting will discuss drug trafficking, as well as jointly combating the human trafficking,” she said.
